Go. Now.

I don't know how long this has been the case, but the trailer for The Golden Compass is online.

I have nothing to say, other than: Damn!

Go check it out immediately.

Cool trailer! My immediate concern is that the subtleties of the book will be lost. I mean, I thought the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe was pretty good as a movie, but something that was slightly different than the book, which is ok. I mean, even with the Potter books, the movie is mostly accurate, but you miss a bunch that books can add.

It'll go on my list to see!

I'm sure we'll lose some of the subtleties, but just the look of the thing is amazing. I got chills when I saw Lyra riding the bear across the tundra. And Sam Elliot? Brilliant.

Sometimes I just love the idea of spectacle. Even if something fails as art, there are times I can still appreciate it for the spectacle that it provides. This may be one of those times.

Interesting that they're not billing it as "His Dark Materials 1: The Golden Compass," though.

Oh, it looks beautiful, no doubt. Sometimes it takes me a few viewings to seperate it from the images in my head, though.

Interesting about the billing, I wonder if they already have the others in the can or if they are waiting for box office returns. I wonder how the other book to movies have worked such as LWW or Bridge to Terabithia in terms of profitability.

A number of years ago -- back when I worked for a living -- I attending Licensing, which is the big trade licensing convention. I met with a guy from New Line and this was the first time I'd heard about His Dark Materials. (This was 2004, I think.) He specifically mentioned that it was a trilogy and told me that it was being positioned in terms of audience "between Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter."

So I guess they're planning on the trilogy, but maybe holding off on the branding because they're worried it'll fatigue people or something? I dunno.

I'm generally a pretty happy person, but can I just tell you that that trailer makes me SO VERY VERY VERY VERY HAPPY?!

First of all, it gives me such a deep appreciation for modern movie technology. That film looks beautiful. The effects look beautiful. Daniel Craig is (well, you know how I feel about him).

Thanks for posting this!! I'm going to reread the series. Those books were incredible, and now that I see how gorgeous the movie is going to be, I want to fully steep in the experience.

Yeah, I'm gonna re-read the books, too, but closer to the movie, I think. Figure this fall.

We should coordinate so we can discuss.

The thing I hate is when I learn that I pronounce things incorrectly.

I say LEE-ra. They say LIE-ra.

I pictured the bears mostly two footed and upright.

Yeah, I pictured the bears that way, too. I imagine they put them all fours because 1) they would be too tall to keep in frame with the smaller Lyra otherwise and 2) it might look silly that way -- they're less anthropomorphic on all fours and, thus, less cartoony.
