Guest Bloggin' About Agents!

Posted on: 03/04/11

Chuck Sambuchino over at the Guide to Literary Agents asked me to guest-blog on the topic of "How I Got My Agent." It's a story I've told a few times when asked at events, but now it's written down in actual pixels for the whole world!

See it here: How I Got My Agent.

I've heard "published" writers say that there is some luck, but there is also creating opportunities as you did by going to conferences and setting up appointments ahead of time. This last fall (2010) I went to my first writer's conference. I learned a lot about what to do and what not to do. Mostly, I learned to do my homework before going. Knowing what each editor is looking for and scheduling appointments with the editors who want what I have -- not wasting time on poor matches -- will be an important part of my preparation for the next conference I attend.

I am...curious as to why you put "published" in quotation marks. :)

And creating your own opportunities is definitely one way you can take the reins. But sometimes only dumb luck will see to it that, for example, you end up at a conference bar with the absolute perfect editor for your book.

I talk more about luck here: http://barrylyga.com/new/wa-publication-2.html

Thanks for your comment, Mary!
