Star Wars II!

Posted on: 04/20/10

So cool! I just had to post this. I’d never seen it before (well, maybe I have — I might have seen it back when it first aired, but I don’t have a memory of it). I stumbled upon it on Ain't It Cool News.

It's the original trailer for The Empire Strikes Back...voiced by Harrison Ford!

Most amazing thing about it? The way it manages to make a movie that was exciting and fun and make it seem bland as hell! :)

The hurried talking reminds me of the Clone Wars cartoons now on Cartoon network. My favorite lines: "an epic romance"
"galactic odyssey against oppression"
"Han Solo"

This was mainly because of how Harrison Ford said them.

What was that water tank thing? I can't remember it.

I think most most trailer narration sounds as if it is narrated by someone's grandfather, as in very serious but well spoken and exciting. This sounds as if it's narrated by the uncle on the mother's side, he smokes and rides a motorbike, and when he narrates movies he doesn't bother narrating at a slow pace, he just blurts it out because it's so awesome.

Also when he said "Han Solo" was hilarious. Macie Smith, the water tank thing is after luke is attacked by the Wampa, and is placed in this tank to heal.

@Theo: Thanks for hopping in to explain the water tank while I was offline!

Btw, the official name is "batch tank," and no, I didn't have to look that up. *hangs head*

Movie trailers

Movie trailers have come a long way since 1980.

Watch any old trailers from the era and you'll have pretty much the same reaction — they just didn't put as much into them as they do today. (And as an editor, I'm keenly aware of what goes into making a good movie trailer.)

I suspect this was also a "teaser" trailer, rather than a final release trailer, as indicated by the comparative lack of visual effects (just two shots, one at the beginning and one at the end), implying they were still working on them. (Not even any lightsaber or laser effects.)

Oh, and just to prove my geek cred, it's "bacta" tank. I suspect your iPhone's autocorrect feature nabbed you on that one... :-)
