SNIKT!

Posted on: 02/11/09

It was only a matter of time before my misbegotten comic book-riddled past caught up to me, and now it has. But whereas your average comic-book-geek-turned-novelist ends up being summoned back to the world of comics for a special mini-series or a story arc on an ongoing title, I was lured in a different way: with a novel.

Wolverine: Worst Day Ever
is a short novel for kids ages 10-12 (ish), featuring a brand-new look at everyone’s favorite metal-boned mutant. I don’t want to say too much lest I give away some of the surprises, but I think I managed to find a unique way of looking at Wolverine...which was no mean feat, given how long he’s been around and how many other people have had their hands on him!

Todd Nauck's very cool cover to Wolverine: Worst Day Ever.

The book is told as a series of blog entries by a new student at Xavier’s School, with illustrations culled from Wolverine and X-Men comics going back as far as Giant-Size X-Men #1 (and, yeah, I thought of Fanboy every time I flipped through that comic…). It was a lot of fun to write and I think it’ll look great. I wrote it for kids, but your average forty-year-old Wolverine fan should get a kick out of it, too. Plenty of in-jokes in there for the geeks. Represent!

Oh, and it has this most awesomely cool cover by Todd Nauck. Bravo, Todd!

The book should be in stores in April.

A silly question

As a fanboy geek (hi!) who loves Wolverine but hasn't liked the last few years of Marvel continuity (the relentlessly depressing stuff, in both the X-Books and elsewhere, with both current events like Decimation and Messiah Complex, and lots and lots of retcons which take Logan and a host of other folks and make their pasts darker than they ever have been), but who loves things like Wolverine First Class and X-Men First Class -- since this is all-ages, may I assume this is more like the classic stuff than the last five years or so?

Not a silly question at all! I think you're gonna love it. I tried to make this book work for fans of all the various iterations of Wolverine. If you like the First Class version of Wolverine, you'll see a lot to like in this book. If you like the "SNIKT first, ask questions later" version of Wolverine, you'll be able to read between the lines and see the guy you like. It's impossible to make everyone happy, but I tried!

Fantastic!

Fantastic! I'm definitely in then -- so now I have another question -- does it make a difference for you if I get it from a local comics shop, or from Amazon?

It doesn't make a difference to me, personally, where you buy it. I always encourage people to support their local independent stores, but it's up to you. It'll read the same no matter where you buy it. :)

Cool!

Cool! (Didn't know if you got more or less money/exposure depending on the source, but if it made a difference I wanted to take it into account.)
